(March 12, 2026) — A new National Guard Educational Foundation program will cover the cost for most NGAUS members to escort veterans traveling on Honor Flight trips to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials that commemorate their service. Honor Flight Guardians stay with their assigned veterans for the entire trip, providing physical assistance, logistical support and companionship throughout the journey. Veterans pay nothing for the trip, thanks to a long list of sponsors, but Guardians usually donate $400 or more for the experience. The George and Charlotte Demetriades Guardian Program, which is administered by the NGEF in conjunction with the Honor Flight Network, will cover that expense for NGAUS active-annual, active-life and digital-life members. George Demetriades Jr., the son of George and Charlotte Demetriades, is underwriting the program. He is an Iraqi War veteran who served in both the Maryland and Tennessee Army National Guard. Campbell said because of this, he has a list of the five most common reasons veterans decline the trip: “I don’t deserve it,” “I’ve been to D.C. before,” “I have a medical condition,” “I’m angry,” or “I don’t want to relive my experiences.” Campbell said veterans can still go despite these concerns. But he doesn’t want to undermine those reasons, which is why he makes sure not to call them excuses. In a pamphlet he has, he also offers rebuttals for each point. Campbell said everyone who goes on the flight is glad they went. “It not only changes the veteran’s life profoundly, it affects the family, especially the spouse, the circle of friends, entire communities,” Campbell said. She sold MIA/POW bracelets to raise money and recruited other youth organizations to join her campaign by collecting bottles and cans, hosting yard sales, and asking for sponsorships. “The State Project I led during my term was called ‘To Honor, To Remember,’ and its goal was to raise money to put Vietnam veterans on the Honor Flight, with the intent of filling the plane,” recalls Kraatz. “Sending an Honor Flight devoted solely to Vietnam veterans will allow us to give them the recognition and honor that they deserve.” The trip, named “C.A.R. Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight,” will take the veterans to Arlington National Cemetery to participate in a wreath-laying, then to the National Mall to visit the memorials honoring those who served. The veterans will receive the Vietnam War Commemorative Pin during a special pinning ceremony at 2:50 p.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The South Carolina Combat Veterans Association will be touring the memorials on Saturday, October 9, with Honor Flight’s Lone Eagle program which serves veterans who do not live near a regional Honor Flight Hub. ​ ​​“Honor Flight recognizes that race and gender shaped the military experience for many of our veterans, particularly of previous generations, so we are proud to provide special opportunities for these veterans to experience their Honor Flight trips together,” said Meredith Rosenbeck, CEO of Honor Flight Network. “Historically, these groups have felt underrepresented in the veterans’ community, and it is our hope that these trips send the message that the Honor Flight Network is here to honor all who served.” All Honor Flight trips visit Washington’s national memorials. The bus allows veterans to better identify his and her transportation as they seek out their bus at each stop. In addition to being helpful, the buses exhibit a “patriotic wow factor” and we find veterans and visitors to the memorials enjoy getting their picture alongside each bus during each stop at the memorials. We find they also go on to post these pictures on social media, thus furthering the reach of the branding opportunity and expanding the opportunity to tell the Honor Flight story. ### DONOR RECOGNITION Businesses that become bus sponsors receive special branded logo recognition on the bus alongside the Honor Flight Network logo at the rear of the bus. Each bus is reserved exclusively for the use of Honor Flight during our season but will remain in circulation when not in use by Honor Flight.
