My Grampy, Stephen Bartlett, was an army veteran who fought in the Pacific theater in World War II. In November of 2014, he visited DC with Honor Flight Maine. Since I live in DC, I was able to join him while he toured the monuments with his Honor Flight group. I could tell how much the experience meant to him. He passed away just over a year later. I greatly appreciate that Honor Flight made it possible for him to see his monuments before he died. This donation is in tribute to him and his service.Sam Norton, grandson
Bate, Arthur Harold
In honor of Arthur "Harry" Bate who served as a US Marine during WWII as a Flight Commander in China. Post war, he benefited many fallen troops by facilitating their return to home soil and cross country flights by inaugurating with American Airlines the connections and setup to make the transport accessible and honorable to the departed soldier. His attention to details in transport served to both benefit and bless the families of the fallen. This gift is in honor of him and in memory of how he served many who gave the ultimate price. Uncle Harry was my ’favorite uncle’, and with his love for and connection to airlines (decades as a VP with American Airlines), he helped facilitate in me a love for airplanes and flying. Uncle Harry taught us a lot through the years and gave my brothers and I our first ’ground school’ day in flying taking us ’aboard’ a Piper for ’instruction’. He welcomed us aboard many ’planes’ through the years with a special photo opp in a 707 cockpit.Casey and Joy Crockett - blessed family

Genial, helpful to everyone, Howard Bennett rarely spoke of his time in the military until late in his life. Family and friends were delighted but not really surprised to learn that Howard was a genuine war hero. His Honor Flight, which he made with his son, was enormously meaningful to him.a friend of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren
Milton (Bud) Besch was a WWII Navy veteran who enlisted at age 16. Both his tall stature and having been birthed at home with no official birth certificate at that time helped him appear older. While he spoke little of his war time experience, he instilled in his children a love of county and the importance of being a good and brave citizen. All of his brothers and many of his children and grandchildren are veterans, both males and females. Bud worked many years in the airline industry. He supported many veteran organizations during his life. Bud was called to his heavenly home in 2014. On this fifth anniversary of our loving father’s passing, we are grateful to show our appreciation by supporting other veterans through Honor Flight.Your Eternally Grateful Family

Your honor and integrity served us all well. For 31 years, you served in the U.S.Air Force as a command pilot and squadron commander. You went from a draftee airplane mechanic in WWII with only a high school education, to qualifying as a pilot and serving as a pilot instructor during WWII in the B24; to serving during Korea as a command pilot with the B29 and B36; to serving during the Cold War as a command pilot with the B52; to serving in Vietnam in the command section flying over southeast Asia. LTC Joseph P Daugherty Dad:I am so thankful to you for your service! Your bravery, courage, fortitude, love and patriotism are so inspiring! As a young child I remember you leaving in a taxi cab in the dark early morning hours of our CO Springs home. Our mother was so strong too and we were too young to realize the danger that you were entering on behalf of our great country. I recall with such joy your triumphant return home! I remember being so proud and feeling such happiness! It was only later when I was older that I began to understand the sacrifices you and Mom both made and the terror and awful experiences you must have endured in Viet Nam. Thank you so much for being a hero! I am so fortunate to have had your example of selfless determination and strength! I love you very much and I am so glad we are having this opportunty to properly acknowledge you!Jean M Daugherty (Leapley)

WALTER MOTACEK WAS MY 2ND COUSIN. HE LIVE/FARMED NEAR SPENCER, NEBRASKA. IN JANUARY 1945---HE WAS DRAFTED INTO THE U.S. ARMY. BY THE SUMMER OF 1945 HE WAS ON A SHIP HEADING FOR OKINAWA TO FORM UP WITH THE PLANNED ASSAULT ARMIES THAT WERE GOING TO ATTACK MAINLAND JAPAN. BUT---IN AUGUST---THE ATOMIC BOMBS WERE DROPPED ON MAINLAND JAPAN AND THE JAPANESE THEN SURRENDERED. WALT AND MANY OTHER INFANTRY MEN WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE MAINLAND ASSAULT OF JAPAN. HE AND OTHERS WERE VERY, VERY LUCKY THAT THE WAR WAS OVER. WALT STILL HAD ABOUT A 1 1/4 YEAR REMAINING ON HIS 2 YEAR TOUR OF DUTY. HE THEN WAS SELECTED/BECAME PART OF THE HONOR GUARD PROTECTING GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, THE GOVENOR-GENERAL OF JAPAN. WALT’S REGULAR DUTIES INCLUDED STANDING GUARD/CHECKING VISITORS INTO MACARTHUR’S OFFICE THAT WAS LOCATED IN TOKYO. WHILE IN JAPAN WALT COLLECTED ABOUT 120 PICTURES (MOST FROM OTHER SOLDIERS WITH BETTER CAMERAS) OF SCENES PHOTO GRAFTED IN POST WARTIME.NEPHEW---DONALD MOTACEK

Thank you for your service. You survived the Death March of the Philippine Islands during WWII only to die in Cabanatuan POW camp only 35 miles from where my mother (your wife), my brother (Clay) and I (Beth) were imprisoned by the Japanese at Santo Tomas University. Clay and I visited your grave on the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Manila where you were on business. You signed up that day to join the US Army and we never saw you again. I love and forgive you for that sacrifice.Beth O’Gorman
